**Adult Dog Worming Protocols**
We often get asked about our worming protocols for kennel management, which is great! We welcome all questions, as it helps others who may have multiple dogs or want to implement similar practices.
For our program, we purchase Fenbendazole from horseprerace.com in the 10% concentration (not the 20%!). It’s available in sizes ranging from 8 ounces to a gallon.
We administer 1 ml per 5 lbs of body weight for each dog, for 3 consecutive days every month for febendazole.
In addition to Fenbendazole, we also give a single dose of moxidectin or ivermectin. Ivermectin is the main ingredient in Heartgard, while moxidectin is found in ProHeart 6 and 12, as well as Simparica Trio. These products provide long-term heartworm and parasite prevention. Please speak with your vet on proper dosages for your dogs weight.
We actively avoid Pyrantel, as it’s often ineffective, especially in kennels with multiple dogs.
For coccidia, which can be spread through soil and critters like raccoons, possums, and horses, we use Toltrazuril. It's been effective for us in managing this parasite.
Hookworms can be resistant to many dewormers, so it’s essential to find a combination that works for your dogs and to stay ahead of their life cycles. Proper ground and environment management are also key in controlling parasites, but with Florida summers all you can do is be proactive.
Do we have it down perfectly? Not yet, but with diligent management, we’ve been able to keep things under control and happy to help others with cost affective deworming protocols.
